MMA Gear FAQs
Not sure what gear you need? Here are answers to some common questions about choosing equipment for MMA training.
What gear do I need to start MMA training?
For most beginners, the basics include MMA or boxing gloves, hand wraps, shin guards, a mouthguard, and comfortable training clothes. Your gym may have specific requirements depending on whether you're working on striking, grappling, or sparring, so check with your coach before buying everything at once.
What's the difference between MMA gloves and boxing gloves?
MMA gloves have open fingers that allow you to grip, clinch, and grapple while still providing padding over the knuckles. Boxing gloves have more padding and are generally better suited for heavy bag work, pad work, and striking-focused training.
What size MMA gloves should I buy?
MMA glove sizing is usually based on hand circumference rather than body weight. Measure around the widest part of your hand, excluding the thumb, and compare that measurement with the size chart on the product page. A good fit should feel secure without restricting your hand movement.
Do I need shin guards for MMA?
If your MMA training includes kickboxing, Muay Thai, or striking sparring, shin guards are an important piece of protective equipment. They help protect both you and your training partner when practicing kicks and checking strikes.
Can I use MMA gloves on a heavy bag?
You can, but MMA gloves have considerably less padding than boxing or dedicated bag gloves. For regular heavy bag sessions, boxing gloves or bag gloves generally provide better protection for your hands and wrists.
What protective gear should I wear for MMA sparring?
Depending on the type of sparring, you may need gloves, shin guards, a mouthguard, headgear, and other protective equipment required by your gym. MMA sparring can vary considerably in intensity and rules, so always follow your coach's requirements.
How should MMA gloves fit?
MMA gloves should fit snugly without cutting off circulation or limiting your ability to open and close your hand. They shouldn't slide around during training, and the wrist closure should feel secure when you're striking or grappling.
